Walk your local grocery store and the center aisles will be sure to grab your attention. It’s a maze of branded signage, show-stopping packaging design, and other impressions targeted to grab shopper’s eyes—and wallets. Out on the perimeter of the store however, brand takes a backseat to product. Though the perimeter is quickly becoming the most important aspect of any supermarket, it is still the least branded. He explains; as the rise of internet retailers prevails, Americans will continue to shift towards buying center store items online. What brings them into the store? Todd says, “The perception of the perimeter will increasingly determine where shoppers buy groceries in person.” In today’s food-friendly world, the perimeter must stand out. Even convenience retailers and c-stores—once synonymous with roller hot dogs and stale snacks–are catching up and offering fresh produce and premium prepared meals for a stake in the game.
